It doesn't matter what the article was about, I'm bound to get some amount of misogynistic, anti-Semitic comments, or comments that react to one small line out of an entire piece that I probably used as a part of a more complex counterargument. Anonymity dehumanizes the writer just as much as it does the troll. This has always been true, but now that we no longer have editors to block out ridiculous commenters and curate civilized dialogue, it seems more people feel entitled to this behavior. There's no social check against expressing one's baser impulses. There are lots of good things about anonymity online, of course. But this side of things angers and frightens me. Agreed in full!
