The Autumn/Winter Switch Over
As summer comes to a rather abrupt end and the weather lets us know in no uncertain terms that Autumn is now here, it’s time to start transitioning your wardrobe accordingly. It’s best to start thinking about these changes sooner rather than later – no one wants to see you roaming the streets in a string vest and hot pants in December. Here’s a few tips to make the transition a smooth one:
No matter how tempting, do not pull out the Uggs
Let this year be the year that Uggs die. Please. I beg of you. My hatred of Uggs has been discussed at length on this blog. There is no defense for them. Ugg wearers always seem to say they’re comfy and warm. There are plenty of other boots on the market that are comfy and warm and don’t look like you shoved your feet in two loaves of bread. Let this be the season you try harder.
Tans in the winter do not look natural
Believe it or not White people, your natural skin tone is not orange. Put the fake tan down. Step away from the bottle. It is OK to be pale, trust me, I am and I manage to go through every day life without people thinking I’m a vampire. About 95% of you who think you’re giving yourself a ‘natural glow’ actually look like Japanese Yamanba girls who hang out in Shibuya, and that ain’t a good look. It looks silly enough in the summer, but who exactly do you think you’re fooling in the depths of winter? Stop it.
Let the open toed shoes go
The toes have been out all summer. It’s colder now, your feet want to go under cover. I often get asked if it’s acceptable to wear tights with open toed shoes. Short answer: no. It always looks weird. Hark at all the lovely boots you could be wearing! Show your feet some love.
Tone down the makeup
Nothing looks stranger than your clothes being autumn/winter and your face looking like you’re on your way to carnival. You can pack up those luminous eye and lips shades til next summer.
Not everything has to be beige
One thing that annoys me about this season is that everyone flocks to beige, brown and black shades instantly. It is still possible to wear colour in winter. If anything, I think it’s the perfect time to wear it. It offsets the rich colours of autumn and the cold surroundings of winter perfectly. Pick the right rich, deep shades and be a bit daring. Autumn/Winter need not be boring!
So there you have it. Easy. Go forth and embrace the season. Boots, coats, hats, layering – YEAH!
