Firstly the song was called “Not Myself Tonight” and this post is clearly, a long with many others at the time, promoting the lack of respect for artists in terms of the leak culture we have going on here.

Secondly if the only reason you were offended by the 2 women kissing in the video was because you believed it was faux-lesbianism, it’s not. Christina is fairly open about the fact she is attracted to women and has been since the Stripped era circa 2002 and around the time of this singles release did a bondage shoot for GQ and also featured in the magazine OUT where she once again discussed her sexuality.

I’m glad you rubbished the Gaga comparisons and took it right back to Madonna because Christina herself said that she was heavily inspired by Madonna. A lot of bloggers seem to go down the same route as the Gaga fans that she invented everything and did everything first.

Someone left a comment that said Christina lost creative control on this record and it’s view shared by DJ Premier who worked on it with her he also blamed the record company’s lack of promo for the chart failure of this record. However this album was the 2nd most illegally downloaded album of the year and also won Billboard’s “Best Pop Album” despite the low sales so there is no doubt that Christina will always be relevant, even if this is the “Gaga era.”

Christina aguilera is so beautiful! and she just had anouther baby. i like the song candy man its a good song. she has a great voice!

This is very disappointing. I’ve always thought of Christina as having an amazing voice and a good talent. I can appreciate the fact that she’s trying new sounds and something different but this is just not her. This sounds so poppy & flat out corny. I do see the Gaga comparison but she’s in her own lane. I’m wondering if this is something though her own efforts or is this the record label saying this is what your new image will be. The worst thing for an artist is to lose creative control.

While I love Christina, I have to say I agree with you. I keep wondering what’s going on in her head as she only seems to follow the trends and not set them. For someone with such an insane amount of talent, she is reduced to being labled a gaga copy and that’s sad. I’m a gaga fan but her freakiness will get old. Christina should go against the grain.

OK just saw it. Yup… very reminiscent of Madonna’s Human Nature. Madge must just sit back and LAUGH at all these amateurs try to push the envelope she already shoved into oblivion YEARS ago… tsk tsk.

I still love me some Christina, tho. She just needs to evolve a little.

Meh. The thing that most offends me in this video is Christina’s horrible makeup – somebody needs to get fired for that mess. Otherwise, as somebody mentioned earlier, this video is merely the standard “Hey, I’m back and I’m about to get criz-azy up in here!” to go along with a formulaic song. Uninspired, yes but hardly unexpected. Other tracks on the album boast some rather interesting co-writers (Sia, Le Tigre, Peaches, Ladytron) so, hopefully, any future videos will be somewhat more imaginative.

However, I will say that I think the referencing to other artists in this video is on purpose. There’s definitely more than one nod to Madonna – you mentioned Human Nature but there’s imagery from Express Yourself as well. I’m pretty sure the “torching the wardrobe” bit is in reference to Freedom by George Michael and the scene with the male dancers in the rain reminds me of a 90s R&B video though I can’t be sure which one.

BTW does this song have a different title in the UK? The video I was able to find (your link doesn’t work) is entitled Not Myself Tonight.

This line is pure brilliance:

“I’m sure her son will love it when he’s school age and his friends tell him they wack off to his mama’s video.”

I’ve often wondered the same thing. What will Madonna’s or Christina’s kids think when they’re older? I think the same thing about the offspring of actresses who do really steamy sex scenes in their movies, like Patricia Arquette in Lost Highway.

But I have to disagree with you: the walking around in underwear thing isn’t old yet.

Ugh.. this is disappointing.. Christina has the talent to rise above this. Then again, Lady Gaga does too.. she’s just batshit crazy. But I really thought her comeback could be more mature, but still musically groundbreaking, and technically flawless.

Unfortunately, this song doesn’t represent that. It’s a shame really.
